The Sandias covered in snowy clouds while cacti stand sentry.

When I moved to Albuquerque, I knew the summers would be hot. I had no idea how winter would be in the high desert, but I was happy to discover winters are rather pleasant in the Land of Enchantment.

Thanks to the snowy skies, we couldn’t see anything past the old Piñon Motel sign.

The few times we’ve had snow it has always melted right before I had a chance to appreciate it. Keeping that in mind as it came down, I got up early to see what the Duke City looks like in snow.

Right away, I could see the snow wasn’t going to last long. The news said the temps would creep back up above freezing in a day, so like a good sale, I knew I had to explore today before the snow took its leave tomorrow.

I wasn’t disappointed. There were beautiful scenes all around the city. Old motel signs that showed their decades of being bleached by the sun looked otherworldly blanketed in clouds and slowly drifting snow.

Cacti in ice, downtown moving slowly, and few cars on the road made for a pleasant sightseeing adventure around town.

A friend and I headed up to the open space in the foothills of the Sandias, where we were amazed that the Sandias were gone. The snow and clouds were so thick the normal grandeur of the Sandias were hidden and looked all the more mysterious for it.

The snow is already melting on Central Ave.

We had a great time sightseeing, and it’s always fun to see your home from a different perspective. Even though it was cold and snowy, the Duke City was as beautiful as ever.

Soon enough we’ll all be under the summer sun again, but for now let’s all celebrate our city for its ever so brief winter beauty.

Let’s see yours, #ABQ!
