Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

The New Mexico State Fair is Back!

After canceling last year due to Covid, this year the State Fair is back and better than ever.

As I strolled the grounds just before the gates opened, I heard an unusual sound that went something like, “wheeeeeeeeeee

I turned my head and saw a robot on what looked like tank treads go zipping by me. It raced down to a table where people had lollipops out for people stopping by.

The robot sped up to the table, its mechanical arm stretched itself forward, the claw turned ever so slightly and picked up a lollipop.

Team members of the New Mexico State Police Bomb Squad.

It’s theft complete, the mechanical arm retracted, the robot turned on its treads and came racing back to a team member of the New Mexico State Police Bomb Squad who took the lollipop from the robot, smiled, and popped it into his mouth.

I started laughing, and that was how I met the New Mexico State Police Bomb Squad.

Fights bombs (In a pinch it also  grabs the occasional  lollipop).

EOD = The Good Guys that stop bombs

The Bomb Squad is also known as EOD, which stands for, “Explosives and Ordnance Disposal.”

In the day-to-day real world, when an explosive device or bomb is found, this is the team that puts themselves in harm’s way to make sure no one dies.

If you’ve ever seen the Hollywood film, The Hurt Locker,  the main character is an EOD specialist and one member of the New Mexico team came from the U.S. Military EOD.

This heavy duty robot can climb stairs and withstand explosions.

Come meet law enforcement; get a new career!

In addition to the New Mexico State Police, the Albuquerque’s Sheriff’s Office, FBI, and Albuquerque Police are here at the fair, and are happy to talk about their work and career opportunities in their departments.

The State Police were happy to talk about their jobs and show off their equipment.
